Kibali Gold Dominates DRC Gold Production Despite Regional Instability
According to statistics from the Technical Unit for Coordination and Mining Planning (CTCPM) under the Ministry of Mines, Kibali Gold, a leading industrial gold mining company based in the Haut-Uele province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), produced 5,865.62 kilograms of gold between January and March 2025.
This output represents 99.5% of the country’s total industrial gold production during that period.
Kibali Gold significantly outperformed its competitors. MCCR recorded just 18.65 kg (0.3%), followed by Kimia Mining Investment with 4.88 kg (0.083%) and Sokomo (Ding Cheng) with 4.62 kg (0.078%).
In 2024, Kibali Gold also dominated the sector, contributing 99.6% of the industrial gold output with a total of 26,075.10 kg, valued at USD 1.396 billion. MCCR trailed with 102.92 kg, while Kimia Mining reported only 5.73 kg.
Despite Kibali’s strong performance, DRC’s mining statistics for 2024 show a 3% decrease in gold export volume compared to 2023.
However, the export value rose significantly. The country exported 27,934.90 kg of gold in 2024, valued at USD 1.53 billion, compared to 28,808.38 kg in 2023, which was worth USD 1.33 billion — reflecting a 15% increase in value despite the slight drop in quantity.
Looking ahead, gold production and exports in 2025 may face further declines due to growing insecurity in the eastern part of the country.
Armed groups, including the Rwandan army and M23 rebels, have occupied key gold mining areas and continue to control the cities of Goma and Bukavu, raising concerns over access to mining sites and safe transport routes.
